The Historic Connection: Pallacorda

Did you know that tennis originated in Italy and France? The sport was called “Pallacorda,” also known as “trincotto” or “jeau de paume” in French. Dating back to the XIII century, it shares similarities with fistball and was the original racket sport from which modern tennis descended.

The name “pallacorda” referred to the ball’s trajectory over a stretched rope. Originating as a game among nobles, it eventually evolved into the first professional sport of the Middle Ages. From its roots in a Latin game, pallacorda evolved into real tennis, which later spread across Europe. If you are interested in finding out more while in Italy, head to the civic museums of Jesi in Le Marche to see examples of ancient leather balls used for the sport, the region where they were made.
