What is The Palio?
The Palio is an exhilarating, bareback horse race held in the centre of Siena. It enthralls both locals and visitors from around the world, who gather to witness this extraordinary spectacle. The race represents the culmination of intense rivalries among the city’s various districts, known as ‘contrade’.
When is The Palio?
The Palio takes place on two dates each year: the 2nd of July (Palio di Provenzano) and the 16th of August (Palio dell’Assunta). While some believe it originated in the 6th century, it is generally thought to have started in 1482 as a civic celebration. Since 1701, it has been held biannually, with few exceptions.
How long is The Palio?
The Palio spans four days, culminating in the horse race on the final day. The race itself is a brief but intense affair, lasting about a minute as the horses make three dramatic laps around Piazza del Campo. Prior to the main event, six trial runs are held in the morning and in the afternoon.
The coveted prize of The Palio is the “Drappellone,” a large, artistically designed canvas that the winning ‘contrada’ proudly displays in its museum.
The buildup and celebrations surrounding the event are vast, featuring vibrant costumes, flags, historical processions and intense competition among the city’s seventeen contrade, creating an electrifying atmosphere.
Who competes in The Palio?
The seventeen districts or contrade of Siena compete in The Palio. When you stroll through Siena, you can tell which contrada you are in, according to the flags, emblems and colours you will see around you.
The seventeen ‘contrade’ are Dragon, Giraffe, Owl, Unicorn, Shell, Porcupine, She-Wolf, Goose, Eagle, Snail, Wave, Panther, Forest, Tortoise, Tower, Caterpillar, Ram, Tower and Forest.
What are the rules of The Palio?
The rules are complicated but the main ones are clear. Ten horses and jockeys, representing ten of the seventeen contrade, race bareback around Piazza del Campo. Not all contrade participate in every race. The seven that did not compete in the corresponding race the previous year are automatically included, while the remaining three are chosen by a draw held twice annually, in late May and early July.
On the first day of The Palio, lots are drawn and horses are assigned to the contrade. While each contrada selects its jockey, the horses are assigned by lot, just four days before the race. Notably, a riderless horse can still win if it crosses the finish line first.
On the day of The Palio
The day begins at 8am with the jockeys’ mass in the chapel next to the Palazzo Comunale. After the mass, the final trial takes place in Piazza del Campo, then the jockeys’ names are announced.
A blessing ceremony for each horse is performed in each contrada later in the afternoon, before joining the grand parade in historical costume. The colourful parade through the city is huge, with drums, flags and hundreds of participants, ending in Piazza del Campo. It culminates in the race itself at around 7pm.
How can you attend The Palio?
If you arrive early enough to find a good spot, you can attend the race for free from the centre of Piazza del Campo. Arrive by around 4pm at the latest. There are also tickets available for more comfortable positions from which to watch the Palio around the Piazza and prices vary for those places.
