In our quest to uncover Italy’s hidden gems, we set our sights on the alluring region of Puglia. August is the perfect time to explore this southern paradise, where pristine beaches, delectable cuisine and rich cultural heritage await. The warm, sunny days are ideal for cooling swims in the sea or in the pool, while the evenings come alive with vibrant festivals that truly enhance the magic of staying in Puglia.
Our adventure takes us along the Ionian coast, passing through the Valle D’Itria, down to the very tip of Italy’s boot, around the Adriatic coast and inland again. Each stop promises beauty, art and nature, as we stay in prestigious villas and immerse ourselves in authentic local celebrations, creating unforgettable memories.
Monopoli, Masseria Profilo & the Mareviglioso Festival
Our journey begins in the picturesque countryside of Monopoli, where we arrive at the exquisite Masseria Profilo. Surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and typical dry white-stone walls, this countryside villa is ideal for families or groups looking for an authentic experience of Puglia. The renovated, historic, 18th-century residence and stables offer a blend of traditional charm and modern amenities for up to ten guests.
The countryard and gardens are a glorious setting for unwinding together. Enjoy leisurely meals in the outdoor dining area with its stone barbecue and its pretty vine-covered canopy. A pathway lined with olive and almond trees leads to an inviting swimming pool.
After a siesta, we feel revived and head to the nearby town of Polignano a Mare, just a short 10-minute drive away, to attend the Mareviglioso Festival. This vibrant event celebrates the sea, the sun and the hometown hero Domenico Modugno, known for his famous song “Volare.”
The festival features street artists, exhibits, artisan crafts and delicious seafood, all set against the backdrop of Modugno’s music. We enjoy the street fair atmosphere, indulge in delicious seafood and dance to the lively tunes. The highlight of the festival is the Palio del Mare, which includes a blessing of the fleet, a boat parade and a boating competition.
Exploring Villa Manco & La Festa della Madonna di Leuca
The next day, we head south to Santa Maria di Leuca, where we are welcomed by the stunning Villa Manco. This impressive villa, set amidst a 3000-square-metre garden filled with palm trees and typical Mediterranean plants, offers breathtaking sea views and an oasis of tranquillity. Inside, its spacious living areas feel airy and welcoming, with an open-plan living area with large windows overlooking the lush garden and an impressive indoor pool. The adjacent annexe includes additional bedrooms and a unique bathroom built in a renovated trullo.
Outside, an inviting swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds, sets the scene for leisurely afternoons. A terrace offers spectacular views of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, making it an ideal spot to enjoy sunsets together while savouring a glass of local Primitivo or Negroamaro wine.
In the evening, we join the locals for La Festa della Madonna di Leuca, held every year on ‘Ferragosto’, 15th August. The Madonna is carried through the lively streets in a great procession, followed by the famous midnight fireworks. The event is a unique celebration that brings together locals and visitors in a joyous atmosphere.
Masseria Samali and the Festa di San Rocco
Our final destination is the charming town of Leverano, where we stay at the beautifully renovated Masseria Samali. This idyllic retreat is nestled near the stunning beaches of Porto Cesareo, Porto Selvaggio and Torre Lapillo. The villa’s historic charm is preserved with original architectural elements dating back to the late 1500s, combined with contemporary comforts. The spacious interiors include five air-conditioned bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, and tastefully decorated living spaces that reflect traditional Puglian style.
Outside on the sweeping terrace, we enjoy breathtaking the tranquil, rural setting and refreshing swims in the pool. We head out to the nearby village of Leverano to experience the Festa di San Rocco, celebrated every year on 16th August. It is a grand celebration filled with religious processions, live music and fireworks. The event culminates with a breathtaking fireworks display, lighting up the night sky in a colourful homage to the patron saint. This festival really offers an authentic taste of local traditions and is a perfect blend of spirituality and festivity.

Other events we loved during our stay in August include La Notte della Taranta in Melpignano, a vibrant celebration of traditional folk music and dance. Another is the Mercatino del Gusto in Maglie, an open-air food market offering local produce and pasta-making lessons – a delicious affair for all ages. The Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca is another must-see, with high-profile artists performing classical music and opera in beautiful settings.
